Michigan sportsmen should call Senators today (1/9/2004)

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and its partners in the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign are urging Michigan sportsmen to contact their senators in support of a bill to make Michigan the 40th state to permit mourning dove hunting.

"It is possible that the Michigan Senate will vote on House Bill 5029 early this year," said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance vice president for government affairs. "When it comes, the vote will likely be very close. The Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign is underscoring the importance of senators hearing from sportsmen constituents in support of the bill."

House Bill 5029, introduced by Rep. Susan Tabor, R-Delta Township, was overwhelmingly approved in the House of Representatives, 64-44.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and its partners formed the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign to pass House Bill 5029. Its members include the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, Huron Pointe Sportsmen's Association, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, Michigan Bow Hunters Association, Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners, Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Michigan State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Michigan State United Coonhunters Association, Michigan Trappers Association, the National Rifle Association and the Professional Kennel Club Inc.

Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Safari Club International are also supporting the effort.

Take Action! Michigan sportsmen are urged to demonstrate their support of Michigan's dove hunting bill by calling their senators today. Ask for a "yes" vote on HB 5029. Tell them that doves are the most abundant gamebird in the country and wildlife biologists say that Michigan's dove population can sustain a hunt.
