Comedian doesn't find PeTA ad to be laughable (12/5/2003)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is notorious for its anti-dairy campaigns that attempt to poke fun at dairy industry slogans. One of the group's latest "dump dairy" ads has wiped the smile off of the face of one comedian.

A recent ad on PETA's website has a photograph of comic Bernard Manning with the slogan: "(Lactose) Intolerant? The white stuff ain't the right stuff." In the ad, Manning's image is used without his consent.

Manning's manager Chris Graham said, "They're using his image without permission for a cause he doesn't in any way endorse. They're taking liberties."

The Manchester Evening News in England quotes Manning saying: "I'm diabetic. I don't drink milk. I don't know what they're talking about."
