Washington Governor must hear from sportsmen on trapping bill (5/15/2003) Washington sportsmen must contact Governor Gary Locke to ensure that he signs a pro-trapping bill. Anti-trapping advocates are putting the pressure on Governor Locke to veto Senate Bill 5179. The bill, sponsored by Senator Bob Oke (R-Port Orchard), will allow the use of traps for population control, scientific research and nuisance wildlife. Trapping was banned in Washington in 2000 by popular vote. Voters believed the campaign of anti-trapping organizations and the ban was accepted 55 to 45. Once the initiative passed, the state attorney general revealed that traps could not be used to control nuisance wildlife. As a result, private property damage from moles, gophers and coyotes has skyrocketed. Senate Bill 5179 passed the Senate by a vote of 37 to 12 and the House vote was 52 to 46. Sportsmen must encourage Governor Locke to resist the demands of the anti's and sign the bill. Take Action! Washington sportsmen should contact Governor Locke and urge him to sign Senate Bill 5179. Remind him that urban areas are experiencing lumpy yards and golf course fairways while rural residents, ranchers and farmers are facing economic hardships dealing with a surplus of predators and no effective means to control them. Senate Bill 5179 solves the problems. Contact Governor Locke at (360) 902-4111. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
