Sunday hunting bills being considered in six states (3/7/2003)

Bills have been introduced in a half-dozen state legislatures that would expand hunting opportunities by permitting or easing restrictions on Sunday hunting.
Sunday hunting legislation has been introduced in Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Currently, 35 states permit Sunday hunting and eight states allow it under special restrictions.

Connecticut Rep. John Piscopo (R-Hartford and Litchfield) introduced House Bill 5396 to allow bowhunting on private property on Sunday with the landowner's written permission. Also being considered in Connecticut is Senate Bill 180, a bill introduced by Senator Tony Guglielmo (R-Tolland and Windham) that would remove restrictions on Sunday hunting. The bills await action in the Joint Committee on the Environment.

In Maryland, House Bill 679 would permit deer hunting on private property with written permission from the landowner. The bill will not apply to the five counties in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area, which include Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties. Delegate Charles Boutin (R-Harford) introduced the bill, which had a hearing on March 3 and awaits a vote in the House Committee on Environmental Matters.

Maine House Bill 496, which was introduced by Representative Jeremy Fischer (D-Presque Isle) to open Sunday hunting in the state, will have a hearing on March 18 in the Joint Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The meeting will be at 1:00 PM in the Cross Office Building.

In New Jersey, two bills take different approaches to expanding hunting opportunities. Assembly Bill 3064, introduced by Assemblywoman Rose Marie Heck (R-Bergen) would allow the Fish and Game Council to authorize Sunday hunting. Another New Jersey bill, Senate Bill 62, introduced by Senator Walter Kavanaugh (R-Morris and Somerset), would permit bowhunting on Sunday for deer. It was assigned to the Senate Economic Growth, Agriculture, and Tourism Committee.

Sportsmen in Pennsylvania may soon be able to hunt deer on Sundays. Currently, crow and coyote hunting are permitted on Sunday. House Bill 326, introduced by Representative Gaynor Cawley (D-Lackawanna), awaits action in the House Committee on Game and Fisheries.

In South Carolina, House Bill 3303 would increase hunting opportunities by allowing sportsmen to hunt deer over bait and permitting Sunday hunting. Representative Jeff Duncan (R-Laurens and Newberry) introduced the bill, which awaits action in the Senate Committee on Fish, Game and Forestry.
