South Dakota passes legislation to permit mountain lion hunting (2/7/2003) The South Dakota legislature has passed a bill permitting the use of hounds to hunt cougars. Senate Bill 27, sponsored by the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee allows the use of dogs when hunting mountain lions. The U. S. Sportsmen's Alliance, working with various South Dakota conservation groups, sent an alert to sportsmen urging them to contact legislators in support of the bill. It passed the House on February 5 by a margin of 61 to 8. The Senate had passed the bill on January 23 by a vote of 27 to 7. It now awaits the governor's signature. Mountain lions are one of the most elusive species in North America. Using dogs is an effective way to manage these animals. South Dakota joins eight other states that allow cougar hunting with hounds. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
