Anti-hunting bill also threatens trapping in Illinois (2/3/2003) Illinois legislation that is aimed at banning hunting in enclosures would also ban trapping across the state. Senate Bill 71, introduced by John Cullerton (D-Chicago), would ban trapping and prohibit the hunting of exotic animals in enclosures. Under the bill, any animal that is restrained from engaging in normal movement could not be dispatched. This broad definition would prohibit the capture and extermination of any animal caught in any trap. Other states that have banned trapping, including Massachusetts, California, Colorado and Washington, are now facing severe nuisance problems with beavers, moles, raccoons and coyotes. Take Action! Illinois sportsmen are urged to attend the Senate Agriculture & Conservation Committee hearing on SB 71. It is scheduled for February 5 at 9AM and will be in the Stratton Building, hearing room A-1. Sportsmen should also contact their senators and tell them to oppose Senate Bill 71. Let them know that there are enough rules and regulations in place to regulate the hunting of animals and that Senate Bill 71 will only cause nuisance wildlife problems for homeowners. To find your state senator and for contact information, call (217) 782-4141. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
