California ammo tax pulled from consideration in 2002 (8/14/2002)

The sponsor of a proposed constitutional amendment that would tax law-abiding sportsmen to compensate for the medical expenses of victims of illegal firearm use has withdrawn the proposal.

Senate Constitutional Amendment 12, a proposal to levy a five-cent tax on each round of ammunition sold in California, was pulled in August. Its sponsor, Senator Don Perata (D-Alameda), intends to revise the amendment and reintroduce it in 2003. The tax would have financed a trauma center fund to pay the medical expenses of victims of illegal firearm use, effectively taxing law-abiding sportsmen and shooters for the suffering caused by criminals. Once passed by the legislature, it would go before the voters.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and the California Waterfowl Association appreciate the efforts of California sportsmen and sport shooters who contacted their legislators in opposition to this constitutional amendment. Both groups will work to ensure that the planned 2003 proposal does not impose on law-abiding gun owners.
