Bill to put trapping in local hands advances in New York (6/28/2002)

A bill that would allow local governments to regulate trapping has passed committee in the New York Assembly.

New York Assembly Bill 5202, one of two bills in the state’s legislature that would grant counties the power to restrict and prohibit trapping, has been approved by the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. The second bill, Senate Bill 3739, remains in committee.

If this bill passes, the anti’s will be able to focus on ending trapping via local channels. The bill will strip the authority from state wildlife agency experts and pass the wildlife management decision-making down to local lawmakers.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance has seen these bills regularly during the organization’s 24-year existence.

Take Action! New York sportsmen need to contact your legislators to voice opposition to AB 5202 and SB 3739. If local governments are permitted to regulate trapping, it won’t be long until they regulate hunting and fishing, too.
