California ammo tax is on the move (6/13/2002)

A proposed constitutional amendment that would tax law-abiding sportsmen to compensate for the medical expenses accrued by victims of illegal firearm activity is advancing in the California legislature.

Senate Constitutional Amendment 12, a proposal to levy a five-cent tax on each round of ammunition sold in California, cleared the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on June 5. The Revenue and Taxation, and Constitutional Amendment Committees must now review it. The tax would finance a trauma center fund to pay the medical expenses of victims of illegal firearm activity.

SCA 12 would unjustly tax sportsmen and sport shooters who obey gun regulations and promote safe handling of firearms. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and the California Waterfowl Association believe that making law-abiding sportsmen pay for the suffering caused by urban criminals is unfair and intolerable.

TAKE ACTION! A proposed constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority in each house to pass and is then placed on the ballot in November. California sportsmen, tell your Senator that you and millions of other responsible gun owners should not have to pay additional taxes to compensate for the actions of criminals. Contact your Senator at (916) 445-4251. To learn your Senator’s name, visit the Legislative Action Center on the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance website.
