Judge halts deer birth control program (1/8/2002) Indiana- An Indiana judge has dismissed a case brought by the nation’s largest animal rights group which was attempting to implement a controversial deer birth control program in the northern Indiana community of Beverly Shores. The Wildlife Legislative Fund of America’s (WLFA) Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund, Indiana Bowhunters Association and Indiana Deer Hunters, working with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), successfully defended the agencies’ authority to regulate a deer birth control program sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), America’s largest animal rights group. The HSUS sued the IDNR over restrictions the agency imposed to protect public safety and the deer herd. The WLFA and Indiana sportsmen quickly intervened on behalf of the agency. "Sportsmen have opposed these projects from the beginning because they are ineffective, extremely expensive and are potentially dangerous to people and other wildlife,” said Rob Sexton, WLFA manager of government affairs. “The judge’s decision puts HSUS on notice that it does not have free rein to establish deer management programs in the states." Indications are that HSUS will apply for a new deer birth control permit for the area. The WLFA and Indiana sportsmen will again oppose such a permit. “There are several reasons to oppose this program not the least of which is that the drugs used in it have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration,” said Sexton. “Hunting, on the other hand, is a proven wildlife management tool that would work in Beverly Shores.” The Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund is the only litigation entity in the country established specifically to represent sportsmen in lawsuits that affect outdoor sports. It provides legal services on behalf of named sportsmen to intervene in such lawsuits or otherwise support the legal work of the government agencies being sued.
