Leech
Lake, Minnesota
When fishing the Midwest, especially for walleye or musky, a
can't miss spot is Leech Lake Minnesota.
With approximately 113,000 acres of water at an average depth of
20 feet this lake is the third largest in Minnesota and offers something
for everyone. Muskies enjoy
excellent natural reproduction in the lake and there is an excellent
population of fish over 40 inches.
The state of Minnesota also stocks musky fingerlings in the lake,
making up for periodic egg-milking activities since Leech Lake muskies
are used as the brood stock for many other lakes.
Walleyes are the primary predator and excellent year-class
production in the late 1990’s has further contributed to the healthy
walleye fishery. Crappies
and perch are also a fisherman’s favorite on this lake with the
potential to land a trophy-sized fish not uncommon. Other game fish species include northern pike, largemouth
bass and bluegills.
Leech Lake is located near Walker in central Minnesota, about
200 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul on highway 371.
Besides fishing, the area offers numerous other activities
including duck, deer and grouse hunting, golfing and snowmobiling.
The small town atmosphere and shops contribute to give the area
an “unspoiled” feeling.

services and more can be found on the Leech Lake Area Chamber of
